Baptism and Thanksgiving Services

Baptism

Baptism (or Christening) is about welcome, welcome into the family of the local church and welcome into the Christian faith. It’s the start of one’s lifelong journey with Jesus. “Come, follow me”, Jesus says.

Baptism is sign of a person accepting the claims of Jesus Christ: that he is the Son of God, that he died and rose again for them and that He invites us into a living relationship with Him day by day.

Water is used to symbolise our sins being washed away and the desire to lead a new life in relationship with God.

When a child is brought to baptism, who is too young to understand these things for themselves, parents and godparents make declarations on their behalf, showing their hope that the child will share with them in being a follower of Jesus Christ. Parents and Godparents need to be comfortable with declaring their own decision to follow Jesus Christ.

Considering baptism gives you a great opportunity for you to explore the Christian faith for yourself. Preparation is very important and involves an initial meeting with one of the clergy and a short course. Baptisms generally take place during the morning service, gathered alongside the church community. As part of the preparation, we also request that families attend a service at the church they wish baptism to take place and also consider becoming part of the church family.

Thanksgiving

In some cases, a baptism may not be right for your family, or perhaps not yet, so we also offer a Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. There is no expectation on parents to make any promises or declarations of Christian faith. The service can be arranged at a time to suit you.
